Poppy Field
Theatre director Eugen Jebeleanu makes his feature film debut with this story about a Bucharest police officer who is sent with his team to quell a homophobic protest that breaks out at a cinema during the screening of a queer film, during which he chances upon a former lover in the middle of the conflict. Constructed as a portrait in which the camera follows the main character closely over the course of 24 hours, Poppy Field is one of the rare examples of Romanian cinema concerned with the subject of sexual identity and its inflection in a largely conservative society.
